Fitness training is the process of improving your body's physical abilities through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and healthy lifestyle habits. It also improves energy levels, strengthens bones and muscles, enhances flexibility, boosts confidence, and promotes better sleep. People who exercise consistently often experience lower stress levels and improved mental focus because physical activity releases chemicals called endorphins, which are known as the "feel-good" hormones. Physical fitness consists of several important components. Cardiovascular endurance refers to the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen during prolonged exercise. Activities such as running, cycling, swimming, and brisk walking improve cardiovascular fitness. Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can produce in a single effort, while muscular endurance is the ability of muscles to perform repeated movements over time without becoming fatigued. Flexibility allows joints to move through their full range of motion and helps reduce the risk of injuries. Another important component is body composition, which represents the proportion of body fat, muscle, bone, and water in the body. Fitness training generally includes different types of exercises. Rest and recovery are equally important because muscles grow and repair during recovery periods. Many misconceptions about fitness exist. The muscular system contains more than 600 muscles, accounting for approximately 40% of total body weight in an average adult. Muscles allow us to move, maintain posture, stabilize joints, and generate heat to regulate body temperature. During exercise, muscles contract and relax repeatedly to produce movement. There are three main types of muscles in the human body: 1. Skeletal Muscles Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons and are responsible for voluntary movements. These muscles are under conscious control and are the primary muscles trained during fitness exercises. Examples include the biceps, quadriceps, chest muscles, and hamstrings. 2. Smooth Muscles Smooth muscles are found in internal organs such as the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels. They work automatically without conscious control and help move food, regulate blood flow, and perform other essential bodily functions. 3. Cardiac Muscle Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. It contracts continuously throughout life to pump blood throughout the body. Like smooth muscle, it functions involuntarily. Understanding the major muscle groups is important because different exercises target different areas of the body. Chest (Pectoralis Major) The chest muscles help with pushing movements. Exercises such as push-ups, bench press, and chest fly primarily target this muscle group. Calves The calf muscles help raise the heel during walking, running, and jumping. Calf raises are commonly performed to strengthen this muscle group. Muscles work in pairs because they can only pull, not push. When one muscle contracts, its opposing muscle relaxes. For example, when performing a bicep curl, the biceps contract while the triceps relax. This relationship is known as an agonist and antagonist muscle pair. Muscle contraction occurs when the brain sends electrical signals through nerves to muscle fibers. The muscle fibers shorten and generate force, allowing movement. This process requires energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and adequate oxygen and nutrients supplied through the bloodstream. Muscles grow stronger through a process called muscle hypertrophy. During resistance training, tiny microscopic tears occur in muscle fibers.
